As a student and as a teacher, I have always held the view that every learner is capable of making a mark in education, occupation, and life if the learner is given equal space and level-playing opportunities. If I am what I am today, it is due to the inclusive nature of education. If our country has made greater strides in engineering in general and the IT sector in particular, it is because of the opportunities provided to learners of all backgrounds. Another important belief of mine is that without a mastery of the basic concepts underlying any engineering branch, we cannot go too far in the field. We cannot hope to build a superstructure without a good foundation. The acquisition of the fundamentals leads to further learning. Critical thinking and opinion and argument development naturally follow. We finally end up with develop the ability to apply the general principles to new settings. This core competency will equip students for all current and future demands. I strongly believe that significant learning occurs when theory is integrated with practice. I can still feel the impact of my teachers having brought the prototypes and models to explain away how various devices worked. This kind of demonstration will greatly improve the conceptual understanding of the subject.
Dr. S.Vijayan has made substantial contributions to the fields of Power Electronics and Drives, FPGA, DSP, and special electrical machines. His research emphasizes the modelling, simulation, design, and implementation of intelligent control strategies for SRM drives, incorporating fuzzy logic, ANFIS, and self-tuning algorithms implemented in real-time using FPGA and DSP platforms. He has successfully guided 21 Ph.D. scholars under Anna University, Chennai, and continues to mentor researchers in emerging technologies. With 62 research publications in reputed national and international journals and conferences, his scholarly work has earned 1127 citations, along with an h-index of 16 and an i10-index of 24, reflecting the high impact of his contributions. He has served as Chief Patron for several IEEE and Springer-sponsored international conferences including ICCMC and ICMSS, fostering innovation and global collaboration in engineering research.
In addition to his teaching and research endeavours, Dr.S.Vijayan possesses extensive experience in institutional administration. He has been deeply involved in AICTE approvals, university affiliations, DOTE procedures, and has played a key role in NAAC and NBA accreditation activities. His leadership has been pivotal in drafting and managing documentation for statutory approvals, academic audits, and quality enhancement measures in both autonomous and affiliated institutions.
Dr.S.Vijayan is a Life Member of ISTE and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE – since 1989). He has served on Boards of Studies and Question Paper Committees for reputed institutions such as PSG College of Technology, Annamalai University, Bharathiar University, and others. He has also organized several AICTE- and DST-sponsored faculty development programs, seminars, and entrepreneurship awareness camps, and has secured government research and training grants totalling ₹10,00,000.
An inspiring educator, visionary leader, and dedicated academician, Dr. S. Vijayan continues to champion excellence in engineering education and research, nurturing the next generation of engineers, scholars, and academic leaders across India.
